Mara began sporadically attending yoga classes in her late 30’s at the urging of a friend. She was captivated with arm balances that seemed impossible to her, yet were clearly doable as demonstrated by the yoga instructor. In 2003, after completing her 200 hour teacher training, a friend showed Mara a yoga book called “Tradition of Unification” by Andrey Lappa. Mara was so intrigued, she brought Andrey Lappa to Charlotte Yoga (with the blessing of Grace Hewitt), for a teacher training program in 2004. This intensive introduction to the Universal Yoga System was to be a pivotal point in her yoga studies.
Mara was deeply inspired by Andrey’s knowledge of yoga philosophy, ayurveda and tantric methodology. His system of spiritual development, as outlined in the Universal Yoga system, along with his creation of arm asana and mandala vinyasa, was the driving force behind Mara’s exponential growth in asana and deeper layers of the Self. It has been Mara’s privilege to continue to study with Andrey Lappa each time he is in the United States. She has worked as his personal assistant and believes firmly in the personal guidance, tapas and grace he transmits through the teacher-student relationship she enjoys with him. She is continuously deepening her spiritual practices with Andrey’s personal guidance, as well as furthering her dynamic meditation practices through Dance of Shiva. For more information about Mara’s amazing teacher visit www.Universal-Yoga.com.
It is Mara’s mission to actively teach the spiritual science of yoga and to embed this spiritual discipline within each yoga class she teaches. While Mara teaches exclusively at Yoga Flex, her classes and short vignettes can also be found on Yoga Vibes www.yogavibes.com . Her classes always reflect elements of sequencing taught to her by Andrey Lappa , along with poses she learned from her one year of practice under Chandra Om (the senior disciple to Sri Dharma Mittra). Mara is certified through Yoga Alliance as an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher and was invited just this year to be a part of Manduka’s “Who’s on the Mat” program found on www.Manduka.com.
Mara leads a Yoga Alliance registered 200 hour teacher training program at Yoga Flex that begins in January 2010. It is through this program that Mara gives aspiring teachers a firm foundation in yoga philosophy, the eight limb path, ayurveda, sacred yoga texts and all realms of an asana practice.
